*THE ISLAMIC CALENDAR*
Before Islam, different renent nations adopted different calendars to discribe events sequence and to derive commercial benefits.
1) The kings of Iran used to start the new calendar from the day of succession.
2) The Roman's calendar started from the first day of Alexander as their king.
3) A- The descendants of Sayyidina Ismail عليه السلام (Arabs) adopted their calendar, when Namrud put Sayyidina Ebrahim عليه السلام in the fire.
B- They later on took the day of the inception of the Ka'bah as their calendar.
C- Then they started reckoning their days with the death of Sayyidina Ka'ab bin Luayy (fore father of Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم)
D- Then they adopted the calendar when Abraha wanted to distroy the Ka'bah with the Elephants so it became known as the "year of the Elephant" .
The Muslims did not adopt a specific calendar till the time of Sayyidina Umar رضي الله عنه
It was in the 16th year of HIJRAH when a receipt was produced before the Caliph (Sayyidina Umar) regarding a loan the borrower was bound to pay in the month of Shabaan. The Caliph asked which Shabaan, this year, previous year, or the next year as it was not stipulated. The Caliph felt, without mentioning the year, the people will suffer in dealing with their commercial affairs.
The Among the proposals given to Ameer ul-Mu’mineen Sayyiduna 'Umar ibn al-Khattab to start the new calendar were:
1. Adopt the Persian calendar
2. Adopt the Roman calendar
3. Begin from the date of the demise of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وصØبه وسلم,
4. Begin from the date of the first revelation.
5. Begin from the migration of Muslims from Makkah to Madinah.
6. Begin from the birth (Mawlid) of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وصØبه وسلم,
‘’Caliph ‘Umar was inclined to choose the date of the Hijrah because it is known when it occurred, and the Sahaba al-Kiraam agreed with him.’’
