Fort Myers Beach, Florida: Damaged homes and boats are seen in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian

Damaged homes and boats are seen in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, Sept. 29, 2022, in Fort Myers Beach, Florida.

Nearly 2 million people were without power and crews were preparing to conduct rescue efforts early Thursday as Tropical Storm Ian moved across the U.S. state of Florida.

Forecasters warned of life-threatening, record flooding in the central part of the state, with the storm expected to emerge off the northeastern Florida coast into the Atlantic Ocean Thursday before making a second landfall in the southeastern United States.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said it expects the storm to weaken throughout Thursday, but that it could be near hurricane strength again as it approaches South Carolina on Friday. Forecasters said northeastern Florida and coastal areas of Georgia and South Carolina could get 10 to 20 centimeters of rain, with higher amounts in some isolated areas.
